Do I Need Place Cards?

You’re nearing your big day. You’ve gotten almost all of your invitation responses back. You’ve carefully organized a guest list. The next step is preparing the seating arrangements.

We work with a lot of brides who tell us that they aren’t planning to use any place cards at their reception. Our advice is to reconsider that decision. From a cozy celebration with your closest family and friends to a large gala with many guests, any event can get off to a rocky start when seating hasn’t been given the consideration it needs.

A free for all grab at seating can lead to a badly distributed guest melee. Careful consideration beforehand will allow you to make sure that great-Grandma isn’t seated right next to the sound system’s speakers. Great-Grandma might be feisty, but getting “crunk” might not be her style.

Seating guests of similar ages and interests together seems to be the best configuration. For example, you may want to group your cousins together in one area together, and your aunts and uncles in another. Your most immediate family members will likely prefer a front row seat to the festivities and should get seating near to the head table.

Place cards are an easy and elegant way to help your guests find their seats. Some brides use their wedding favors as place cards, or attach the card to their favors. Your event venue can provide a table at the door leading to your dining area for place card setup. Arrange the place cards alphabetically on the table. This simple addition to your event will help create a comfortable environment for your guests!
